What is meditation?

For many of us life is a constant flurry of activity, which means that it can be difficult to take stock and notice what is really going on or even how we feel. Many people are drawn to meditation as a way of addressing the stresses of such a busy lifestyle, although this is only scratching the surface of meditation’s potential.

In meditation we simply try to notice what is going on - becoming more aware of our body, thoughts and feelings. Through sitting quietly and learning to pay attention in this way we can move away from external activity and start to be aware of how we really feel and what is most important to us.

Little by little we can get to know ourselves better. As we do so we can start to see how habitual many of our thoughts and responses to life are. Through meditation we can open up the space which allows us to find more creative ways of responding to the world.

This increased awareness gives a sense of greater freedom and creativity as we start to choose how to think and react rather than living life on ‘auto-pilot’.

You don't have to be a Buddhist to meditate: our classes are open to all and attract people of all backgrounds, ages, races, religions and lifestyles.
